The computer Section of the Walter Reed Project Kisumu has grown considerably in the past five years. The demand on computers and computer applications in research assays particularly in Flow Cytometry, ELISA, and Digital Microscopy is more intense than ever before. Clinical Trials depend hugely on the use of technology to automate the formerly laborious manual processes. Clinical Data Management is probably one of the biggest functions of the Department. Communication Technology, needless to say, is the backbone of data transfer, information interchange and collaborative research work. The computer department, therefore, is tasked with running the telecommunications network, Clinical Research Data Management, helpdesk and general user support within the Kisumu site.

The Network Administration sub-section is headed by the Network Manager who is a Microsoft Certified Systems Engineer. Under his/her supervision is the Help Desk whose functions involve supporting users at various levels.

The Data Management is headed by a Data Manager, who is both an experienced 4GL programmer and a data management specialist. His is responsible for nine Data Entry Clerks (DECs). The DECs either enter or clean data on study databases depending on ones’ role as detailed in the Data Management Plan (DMP) for the study and Standing Operating Procedures (SOPs) for Data Management.
