Passport & Visa Requirements

A visa is required. This applies to U.S citizens arriving for any purpose and regardless of type of passport. employees and family members can obtain a visa in advance at a Kenyan embassy or consulate.  Alternatively, a visa can be obtained at the airport but lines may be long and processing time slow.  Visas are issued gratis to diplomatic and official passport holders.  For others, the fee is $50. US military and DOD civilians on official orders may enter by showing their ID.

Evidence of yellow fever immunization may be requested upon entry to Kenya.  After arrival, the human resources office will coordinate with the Kenyan Ministry of Foreign Affairs to obtain multiple entry and exit permits.  These are required for resident embassy staff and family members.  Please hand carry twelve passport-sized photos for each family member to facilitate the process.

Housing

Fully furnished, USG-leased or owned residential quarters are provided. All basic furniture and appliances are also provided, including stove, microwave, and refrigerator with freezer compartment, washer, dryer and vacuum cleaner. You may wish to bring small furniture pieces and decorative items, but please note that storage space in quarters is limited, and post cannot pay for commercial storage. We advise against shipment of large pieces of furniture due to security concerns, most quarters, whether houses, townhouses, or apartments, are clustered or on compounds.

Housing is generally good but this is the third world and the quality of the fixtures and the overall finish of residential units are generally inferior to those found in the United States. Many residences do not have garages or covered parking areas. Post provides a welcome kit containing commonly needed items such as bedding, towels, pots and pans, flatware, dishes and kitchen utensils. this must be returned upon receipt of airfreight.

The post’s interagency housing board will determine your assignment to permanent quarters in accordance with 6 fam 700, quarters will be assigned prior to your arrival based on rank of position to be held, family size, and housing availability.  Units in the post housing pool have from two to four bedrooms.  Please contact GSO housing () and/or Nairobi CLO() for a housing questionaire to assist both the housing office and housing board assigning permanent quarters.
